Flood Aid for Guyana - The global concert for Guyana is set for Sunday, February 20th and will be aired via the Internet to Guyanese in the Diaspora and in the South American nation. Internationally renowned flautist Keith Waithe in the UK together with steel pan leader Aubrey Bryan is coordinating the U.K. end. The US end is being pulled together by Professor Vibert Cambridge of the Ohio State University, a noted chronicler of Guyanese music. Musicians and artistes interested in playing/appearing are asked to contact Whaite at keith.waithe4@virgin.net or vibert cambridge cambridg@ohio.edu.

CPIC Inc is a non-profit, non-political, non-religious and tax-exempt organization registered under Internal Revenue Code, Section 501(c)(3). Founded by Dawn C. Stewart, she has worked tirelessly to assist in health issues amongst Caribbean-Americans. She founded AIDS Walk Caribbean, Caribbean Days on Capitol Hill and has received several awards for her work in Guyana and the USA during the past five years CPIC Inc provided Guyana with twenty thousands dollars in assistance (medical supplies) which directly benefited the Georgetown Hospital and programs that benefit hundreds of disadvantaged children, women and HIV/AIDS support. During the Grenada Hurricane relief CPIC provided several hundred dollars of food to the Grenadian government through the Embassy of Grenada.

 

Many overseas Guyana and Caribbean organizations and individuals have jumped to the rescue and have engaged in fund raising activities including: 

  • Eddy Grant, Guyanese singer best known for the '80s hit Electric Avenue, plans to donate proceeds from upcoming music projects to relief efforts
  • The Guyanese-American Cultural Association of Central Florida fundraiser at the Rose Garden Restaurant and other fundraising activities.
  • The National Islamic Association of New Jersey held a fundraising dinner
  • The Guyanese Association of New Jersey, along with other NJ Guyanese-based organizations, hosted a fundraising town hall meeting at the New Jerusalem Temple in Newark.
  • Maureen Walker, Comptroller of Mt Vernon, and Nowrang Balgobin and Vasistha Ramsamugh, proprietors of the Rose Hall catering facility, hosted a  fundraiser in the Bronx in conjunction with the Consulate of Guyana to New York and The Guyana Tri-State Alliance
  • Health & Educational Relief for Guyana, Inc., JRG Fashion Café, Kendrick Cort, Dr. Harrison Mitchell and Dr. John Mitchell coordinated a fundraiser at the café in downtown Brooklyn.
  • The Guyana Flood Relief Organization, a combination of three groups – the Guyana Cultural Association/Folk Festival, Support Guyana Underprivileged Inc., and OSHAG And Friends, held  town hall and fundraising events at the Woodbine Ballroom in Brooklyn
  • Brooklyn Borough President, Marty Markowitz, and Deputy Borough President, Yvonne Graham,  hosted a town hall meeting and fundraiser at Brooklyn Borough Hall
  • Members of the Central Islamic Organisation, the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha, the Sai Baba Organisation and other local groups sent food and supplies by Travel Span airline to Guyana.
  • Health & Educational Relief for Guyana, Inc., JRG Fashion Café, Kendrick Cort, Dr. Harrison Mitchell and Dr. John Mitchell presented a fundraiser at the café in downtown Brooklyn.
  • In Florida relief efforts are being coordinated by a task force that comprises Wesley Kirton, Andy King and Anjanie Persaud of Central Florida and Lance Gibbs, Larry London, Brian Edun, Richard Vasconcellas and Colin Baker of South Florida
  • The Queen's College of Guyana Alumni Association (New York) on Tuesday donated US$2,000 for the benefit of the families of students of Queen's College who were seriously affected by the flood
  • Guyana/Jamaica Relief Fund in Jamaica

  • The Baldeo Community Center at 125-14 Liberty Avenue, Richmond Hill in Queens is accepting and transporting items to Guyana for the flood victims. Call 718-529-2300 for more information.
  • The New York-based Buxtonians for the Educational and Social Advancement of the Community (BESAC), are collecting money, food, water, clothing and medical supplies to help villagers back home.  They plan to ship a container via ocean freight with the aid soon. Packages earmarked “Buxton/Friendship Flood Relief,’ may be dropped off at Williams Shipping, 2513 Tilden Avenue, Brooklyn, N.Y., between Rogers & Bedford Avenues or by calling 718-826-0070. Financial donations can be made to Besac, Inc. and mailed to P.O. Box, 1213 Wall Street Station, N.Y., N.Y. 10268.
  • Guyanese in Los Angeles or nearby areas in California are urged to donate to the Guyana Medical Relief Inc. at 1656 South Hayworth Ave., Los Angeles, 935 4514, California.
